Evolution & Inheritance

The session introduces Year 6 children to the work of Charles Darwin. They will learn that offspring vary from their parents, about the process of natural selection and look at how living things have changed over time.

Evolution & Inheritance Activities Include:
  • 'The Origin of Species' - the life of Charles Darwin
  • 'Inheritance' - identify characteristics passed on from one generation to the next
  • 'Survival of the Fittest' - identify ways in which random mutations result in advantageous adaptations
  • 'Natural Selection' - how variations spread through a population
  • 'The Fossil Record' - looking at how living things have changed over time

Evolution & Inheritance

The Evolution and Inheritance programme will introduce Year 6 children to the work of Charles Darwin.  They will discover for themselves the contribution Darwin made to our understanding of the evolutionary process and how our understanding of the process of evolution has developed over time thanks to the evidence gathered by scientists and palaeontologists.

Children will consider characteristics passed from one generation to the next and recognise that offspring vary from their parents.  They will learn about the process of natural selection and identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.
